Op-Ed Essay

The overall physical condition of a person is very important to their lives. Physical fitness can enhance a person’s state of mind not just how they look. Physical fitness goes beyond trying to look better and into mental health. A person who is physically fit would have a stronger and better mentality than someone who does not exercise regularly. Many ways are shown how a person’s physical fitness affects a person’s brain in positive ways like helps to stimulate happiness and helps to prevent illnesses at younger ages.

In the OPED, “Even a Little Exercise Might Make Us Happier” the author explains how working out can improve the lifestyle of people by making them happier. In the article it states that just 10 minutes of exercise a day can improve a person’s mood more than those who do not workout. Having a better mood can help a person have a better day, and overall take out the anger built up from work, school, or any daily life obstacles. People we tend to be active and with better moods are happier and brighter human beings while being able to also stay positive with difficult things going on around them.

Exercising could also be beneficial for the body as well by lessening the risk of depression and anxiety for a person. Many studies have been conducted to show exercising can help with lessening the medical problems people have and to also improve how their mobility works as well. Past studies done show how a person has a much lower risk of developing depression and anxiety with just a few minutes a day of exercising. With just only a few minutes there can be significant changes between a person who does not move all day and someone who takes daily jogs or walks. A lot of people suffer from depression and anxiety and often do not know that exercising could be a cure or help them become a happier and lighter person.

In the article “Being Young, Active and Physically Fit May Be Very Good for Your Brain” by Gretchen Reynolds, he states “Physically fit young adults have healthier white matter in their brains and better thinking skills than young people who are out of shape…” (Reynolds para. 2). This shows us that with brain scans and many tests, doctors were able to prove that many fit people are healthier and their brain even looks healthier than a person with their same age just a different lifestyle. Exercising also helps a person with their thinking skills and analyzing things because it helps the brain process faster and become more active.

In the article “Sport Experience and Physical Activity: Event-Related Brain Potential and Task Performance Indices of Attention in Young Adults” by Mohamed Aly, Mohamed A. Ahmed, Asmaa Hasan, Haruyuki Kojima, and Abdelhakem R. Abdelhakem, the authors had created an experiment to see if the brain potential increases while the person adds fitness into their daily lives. In the article it states “Given that studies of physical activity effects on cognitive enhancements have typically focused on physical activity, the present study extends the previous findings by revealing that both swimming (as a closed-skill sport) and karate (as an open-skill sport) are relevant for improving the attention system in young adults”. After conducting their experiment with both different groups of people, they concluded that their attention system increases a lot and that there is a  relationship with the brain and exercising. As time goes by, there will be many other studies and cases done to better understand the relationship exercising has with the brain and our bodies.

This might not be the case for every single person and people with severe symptoms but it could be for people who have small cases of depression and anxiety and general illnesses. The body can just do as much as it can on its own but by including exercising we help our body become stronger and better. Many people do not know all the benefits exercising brings to their life, many think exercising is just to look good and fit, or to lose a few pounds but the truth is it is not just about that. Exercising is constantly being misconstrued into having a person looking nice or pretty but not really looked into how it stimulates the brain and the overall well being of a person’s body and mental state. This is how a person can misunderstand and believe exercising is not beneficial for a person.

There are many articles about exercising and promoting how it could be beneficial for a person’s health and how it could in the long run be helpful for a person. There are also a lot of misconceptions and misinterpretations but this is the way society is built to see certain things. With the new test and studies being done this could help a person’s point of view to change and also help change their lifestyle.
