Self- Assessment Essay

Over the course of the semester I feel that I have evolved a lot as a student and a writer. One of the things that has helped me a lot over the course of improving my writing was always re reading my essays and making corrections anywhere it was needed. As a writer there is always room for improvement since there are so many things that can be expressed while writing and also many grammatical things that can be evolving as time changes. While writing my essays for this class I came to improve on evaluating, quoting, summarizing, and citing sources since these are key factors to most essay writing and it is essential to know how to write fluently using these methods of writing skills. Using the textbook “The Norton Field Guide to Writing” and reading to understand the topics being discussed I liked to take notes from the chapters in order to refer back to them while writing and understanding when it is appropriate to quote, summarize, or paraphrase. Another thing I got to practice was using the internet, database resources and the textbooks in order to help me understand things being taught in class and lessons.

One thing I believed that helped me a lot during this class was peer reviews and getting feedback from my professor. I found this useful because it helps me to improve my writing and editing my essays since I would be able to have a stronger foundation for my essay. When it comes to editing and drafting my essays I find that very useful because maybe the foundation of my essay isn’t so strong but once I fix that the second time around my essay becomes stronger and better. I liked learning how to properly insert quotes and how to give credit to authors which makes my essay look more professional. One of the course objectives that I did not get to achieve this semester was “Engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond” because I felt as if I couldn’t really understand this topic as much. I tried my best with all my writings and something I struggled with doing was to engage with genre analysis while writing all my essays this semester. I had lots of fun writing my movie review of 2020 because I felt as the movie was so fresh in my mind it was so easy to write about and express my thoughts about it. While writing my review it felt as if I was talking to someone and recommending the movie to them which is really nice since I like recommending movies and talking about the events of the movie afterwards. I felt that my best essay was the movie review since I had a lot of fun plus I engaged more with it than my other essays.

I feel that this semester taught me on how to express my thoughts on things happening in the real world. I found these essays useful because they weren’t like in other classes that they make students research articles and books that aren’t really relevant to society now and make things harder on students since many have trouble finding research for topics that aren’t so easy to find nowadays. The oped was an essay that I also had fun searching for since it could have been anything I wanted to write about, not a topic given. I could have been selected with my topic and find something of interest like the movie review. The essay that was a bit challenging was the Ecopoetry one since I didn’t have a lot to write about it after the 3rd page but it also wasn’t an essay so dreadful to write about. Overall, I feel like I learned a lot from this class and achieved most of my learning objectives which helped me to become a better writer.
